Founded in 2022, Hira Music School seeks to create a bridge between the Eastern and Western musical traditions. With a focus on the spirituality of music and its ability to act as a tool to both receive from the divine (Mount Hira) and elevate one’s soul and that of the listener (Al-Aqsa).

Tarik Hussein began his musical journey at the age of six with the Piano and Spanish Guitar, falling in love with the likes of Bach, Chopin and Albéniz. Nine years later he began studying Turkish Classical Music on the Oud with the renowned musician Sabahattin Akdagcik, and joined the Australian Turkish Music Ensemble. When he first played a Kanun, he immediately realised that it was he “totem” instrument. It had the flexibility of the Piano, the purity of the Spanish Guitar and the soul of the Oud. From 2011 Tarik began performing with Sufi/Tasawwuf ensembles, most notably the Huzur Ensemble and the Shahbaz Ensemble.

Tarik began teaching music in 2010 and founded Hira Music School in 2022, which has allowed Tarik to share his passion for spiritually grounded music with his community. His initial focus has been to develop the first generation of locally trained Kanun players in Sydney.

In 2022 Tarik formed the Three Rivers Ensemble with 6 friends, in order to share the beauty of spiritual Islamic music with a wider audience. In 2023 he launched a collective called the Rumi School of the Arts to revive the positive aspects of guild systems and support local practitioners of traditional art forms.

Recordings of some of Tarik’s performances have reached over 1 million viewers on YouTube.
